Boko Haram Leader Shekau Says Chibok Girls Have Been Married Off

A new video has emerged where Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has faulted claims by the Nigerian government that a ceasefire has been reached between them. Just a few weeks back, the Nigerian military and presidency announced that a deal had been reached with the Islamic militants to end all hostilities.

A senior presidential aide to President Jonathan also said that an agreement had been reached to free the schoolgirls, whose abduction sparked global anger and demands for their release. The group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, claimed in the video that the  219 schoolgirls kidnapped from the remote northeast town of Chibok, in Borno state, in April had converted to Islam and had been married off.

Shekau, speaking in Hausa, dressed in military fatigues and boots with a black turban, and flanked by 15 armed fighters, said: "We have not made ceasefire with anyone." Shekau had previously threatened to sell the girls as slave brides and also suggested that he would be prepared to release them in exchange for Boko Haram prisoners. In his  latest message, he said while laughing: "We have married them off. They are in their marital homes."
