Oscar Pistorius Gets 5 Years in Prison

Oscar Pistorius, 27, was today sentenced to 5 years in prison for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp 29, after a 7 month trial. He also got a 3 years suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

This sentence has been widely criticized has a mere slap on the wrist because Pistorius is likely to serve only 'one-third of the sentence' (i.e. 20 months) behind bars. However, the parents of Ms Steenkamp, who were in court to hear the sentence, said the punishment “is the right sentence.”

Judge Thokozile Masipa said the state had failed to prove that Oscar's intent was to kill Reeva Steenkamp when he fired 4 rounds through the door of a toilet cubicle in the early hours of 14 February.

Judge Masipa said: "The loss of life cannot be reversed. Nothing I say or do today can reverse what happened on February 14 2013 to the deceased and to her family.

"Hopefully, this judgment on sentence shall provide some sort of closure for the family and all concerned so that they can move on with their lives."

The parents of Ms Steenkamp, 29, were also in court to hear the sentence. They said the punishment “is the right sentence.”

Under South African law, Pistorius will have to serve at least one-sixth of his sentence i.e. 10 months -before he can be considered for parole.
