Jill Bolte Taylor's Stroke of Insight (Ted Talks)

Why you should listen to her:

One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor's brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness ...

Amazed to find herself alive, Taylor spent eight years recovering her ability to think, walk and talk. She has become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of coming back from brain injury stronger than before.

In her case, although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy from her right.

Jill Bolte Taylor:
“I realized, ‘Oh my gosh! I’m having a stroke! I’m having a stroke!’ The next thing my brain says to me is, ‘Wow! This is so cool! How many brain scientists have the opportunity to study their own brain from the inside out?’”

Chinese Baby's Mum Claims Baby was Accidentally Flushed Down the Toilet

The mother of the Chinese new-born found trapped in a sewer pipe claimed she fell pregnant following a one night stand - and then the father of the baby boy abandoned her.

The 22-year-old woman - who has not been named – also said she could not afford an abortion or cope with the stigma of being a single mum.

Chinese media said she went to the shared bathroom in a residential complex when she felt abdominal cramps last Saturday and gave birth. She said the baby slipped into the sewer pipe and she was unable to free him.

She also claimed she was the first to raise the initial alarm and she watched the entire 2-hour rescue in secret.

The landlord called the police and fire fighters for help, after a girl complained that she had heard a ‘kitten-like’ sound in the fourth-floor squat toilet.

The woman, a restaurant worker, reportedly confessed to being the mother after officers found blood-stained tissues and toys in her room and asked her to undergo a medical check.

Nigeria Happy Demo-Crazy Day

Democracy day, May 29th is here. Once again we will go through the motions- insipid speeches, jamboree, empty promises, paid adverts and perhaps articles like this one.

But do we really understand what democracy means? Have we being able to imbibe the spirit of democracy? The recent political debacle over the electoral outcome of the Nigeria Governor's Forum says much. It portends danger come 2015. It shows we are very poor losers.Democracy is not only about winning triumphantly, but also about losing gracefully.

It brings to mind the  2000 U.S. presidential election in which Al Gore conceded to George Bush. Despite the fact that Al Gore won the popular vote by approximately 500,000 votes nationwide, it was George Bush who became president after garnering 271 electoral college votes to Al Gore's 266. At that time, the ongoing electoral recount of the disputed Florida votes was terminated by the U.S supreme court.  This effectively gave George W. Bush a 537 vote victory in Florida and consequently Florida's 25 electoral votes and the presidency.

Baby Rescued Alive from Toilet Pipe in China

A newborn baby boy has been rescued after being flushed down a toilet in a Chinese apartment building, according to media reports.

Firefighters in eastern China rescued the abandoned baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe directly beneath a toilet commode.

Residents in Jinhua, in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang, alerted firefighters on Saturday afternoon (local time) after hearing the two-day-old baby crying in the 4th-floor squat lavatory.
Attempts to pull him out failed, so rescuers sawed away a section of the pipe with the baby inside and took him to a local hospital.

Firefighters and doctors spent nearly an hour taking the pipe apart piece by piece with pliers and saws, before the newborn was freed with its placenta still attached. From the time he was found until when he was taken out, the baby was stuck in the pipe for at least two hours.

The 2.3 kilogram boy suffered cuts to his face and limbs and is now in a stable condition. The baby is being nursed back to health at the hospital and has been reunited with the mother, believed to be a 22 years old single woman.

The police said, they would treat the case as an attempted homicide.

Florida Mom Gives Birth in Wheelchair Outside Hospital

Early on Friday morning, Amy Cavaetta was rushed to the hospital to deliver her 2nd child. But the birth did not go entirely to plan. Cavaetta barely made it outside the Boca Raton hospital in Florida, before the delivery started.

A wheel chair delivery- all is well that ends well! It's interesting to note that the midwife was already outside on the side walk waiting for her to arrive. Don't we all have a thing or two to learn from that?

Children's Day Thoughts

Children are the bedrock on which the society is built. In every nation, race and culture, the same purpose holds true. Our children are the future and they play a major role in determining the voice and strength of the nation.

As we celebrate our children here in Nigeria today, let the voice of these children speak to our hearts.

Let us become models of true leadership whom they can look up to.

Let us give them a better life- good education, food, shelter and clothing, safe and affordable healthcare.

Let us guide them to become the best they can be.

Let the leaders go the extra mile and give these children a voice and a future.

The Nigerian child is worthy of being celebrated, because despite all the challenges and limitations they face, they march on and dream of a greater future.

Happy Children's Day

Segun Agbaje, CEO GTBank plc

Guaranty Trust Bank Plc has sacked 100 workers following its annual appraisal exercise for the 2013 financial year.

In a statement released to the press, Mr Segun Agbaje was quoted as saying:

“The exercise resulted in rank elevation for over 500 employees that put in an exceptional performance during the year. In line with international best practice, 100 employees whose performance fell below the bank’s minimum performance grid were eased out of the bank’s employment in a bid to maintain service quality standards, promote customer satisfaction and enhance the GTBank brand experience.”

Mr Agbaje added that the bank was committed to providing its stakeholders with exceptional service and would continue to seek the best in human capital and train them aggressively towards this end.

PDP Suspends Rivers State Governor, Amaechi

The recent political events in Nigeria can best be described as 'cloak and dagger politics'. Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has become the first casualty of this trend. His suspension from the PDP has just been made public. This action will likely push him into the waiting hands of the opposition, the APC (All Progressive Congress).

A statement issued by the party states that the suspension of Mr. Amaechi was to enforce party discipline.

We all know he contested the chairmanship of the NGF (Nigeria Governor's Forum) against the PDP-anointed candidate, Jonah Jang. The result of the NGF election has divided the NGF in 2 bitter factions.

Oscar Pistorius Won't Race in 2013

South African news outlets have reported that Oscar Pistorius won't compete this year, despite interest from some meet promoters.

"He is nowhere close to being in a position to train," Pistorius' coach, Ampie Louw, told one South African outlet. "He just does fitness exercises in the morning with his family."

Earlier this year, Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14. In March, the conditions of his bail were relaxed, including the return of his passport.

There had been speculation that Pistorius would use the allowance for overseas travel to compete in meets, in part to help fund his legal defense. Pistorius' agent says there has been interest from some meets in Pistorius racing. Other European meets have let it be known that Pistorius is unwelcome, owing to what one meet promoter called a "media circus" that would distract attention from the meet's top athletes.

Pistorius' next court hearing is on June 4. His trial is expected to begin later this year.

Presidency Angry with Akpabio over NGF Elections

Culled from Sunday Punch

There were indications on Saturday that the Presidency was not happy with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, because of the outcome of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum election, which returned the incumbent, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to office for the next two years.

A presidential source, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the Presidency felt betrayed that the election was allowed to hold in the first place.

The source said Akpabio had informed the Presidency that he had the majority of the governors with him.

Beverley says that viewers can expect “a total packaged African young diva to command the right qualities and characteristics of a blunt, sexy go-getter”. She doesn’t really have any role models, choosing rather to take unique attributes from different people. Asked who has influenced her life most, Beverley says “who I want to influence me all depends on the situation at hand”.

Her favourite musicians include John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Phenom and Rihanna.

His friends and family inspired him to enter Big Brother. He has always been a fan of the show and has previously come out tops in two other reality shows. He is hoping to use all his experience and charm to go all the way on Big Brother. If he wins the grand prize, he’ll invest it, but he’s also hoping to make his country proud and use this experience as a platform to achieve other things in his career.

An Uncommon Nigerian in the Comedy Industry- Ali Baba

Stand-up Comedy is a sector of the Nigerian Entertainment Industry that cannot be ignored. This sector has continued to grow in leaps and bounds, turning out some of the finest and creative comedians who can hold their own anywhere and at anytime.

AY, I-go-dye, Seyi Law, Elenu, Julius Agwu, Tee A, Teju Babyface are but a few, of the many springing forth daily. But many of their stories will not be complete without the mention of Ali Baba. Many have testified of how he paved the way for stand-up comedy in Nigeria and opened a whole world of opportunity for many coming behind. In Ali Baba’s words:

"I think anybody who has succeeded needs to show people the path to success. I say this all the time, that if your success has not made any other person successful, then you have failed. Whether it is buying a comedian a car, assisting him in his show, paying a house rent, giving or buying clothes, books, giving them DVDs or sharing the jokes."

Ali Baba’s protégées who were given an opportunity are doing the same for others coming behind them. One man sowed the seed and a huge harvest has erupted.

All hail Ali Baba.

Woolwich Murderer was Arrested in Kenya and Deported to the UK

  • Appeared in court on suspicion of planning to fight for terrorist group
  • Adebolajo was heading for Somalia, to be recruited by Al-Shabaab
  • It is claimed that soon after he was targeted by MI5 as a possible informant
  • He resisted attempts to ‘turn’ him and complained to lawyers he was being harassed

Woolwich suspect Michael Adebolajo came to the attention of MI5 after he appeared in court in Kenya on suspicion of planning to fight for a terrorist group.

He was arrested with 5 others in November 2010. All were said to have been heading for neighbouring Somalia, where they had been recruited by Al-Shabaab, the Islamist insurgent organisation.

The Woolwich Killing & the Unseen Hands of the Illuminati

This is an opinion piece by Femi Fani-Kayode- if you have no stomach for controversy then don't bother reading it.

Were they cultivated, ”programmed” and used by agents of the Illuminati in the British establishment to carry out this gruesome operation and this monstrous sacrifice?

Some things just don’t add up when it comes to the Woolwich killings. There are certainly more questions than answers. Let us examine the facts. An off-duty British soldier by the name of Lee Rigby was walking down the street in the charming and peaceful London suburb of Woolwich. All of a sudden, and out of the blue, he was randomly selected and run over by a car which was being driven by two young black men. After they hit him to the ground with the car the two young men jumped out of it, armed with machetes, knives, a rusty old pistol and a meat cleaver, and in a deep and uncontrollable frenzy amidst shouts of ”Allah u Akbar”, proceeded to take his precious life by carving him up, mutilating him, butchering him and beheading him in full public glare.

David Gallo: Underwater Astonishments (Strictly for Nature Lovers)

This TEDTalks video is strictly for nature lovers. The beauty and intelligence in the little things around us that we take so much for granted, is awesome.

 David Gallo says:
“Today we've only explored about 3 percent of what’s out there in the ocean. Already we've found the world’s highest mountains, the world’s deepest valleys, underwater lakes, underwater waterfalls … . There’s still 97 percent, and either that 97 percent is empty or just full of surprises.”

David Gallo works to push the bounds of oceanic discovery. Active in undersea exploration (sometimes in partnership with legendary Titanic-hunter Robert Ballard), he was one of the first oceanographers to use a combination of manned submersibles and robots to map the ocean world with unprecedented clarity and detail.

Labrinth- 'Beneath Your Beautiful' Featuring Emeli Sandé

This is a soulful ballad you can't get bored listening to and when you stop listening to it, it may play in the background of your mind for a while. Beautiful composition.

"Beneath Your Beautiful" is a song by British singers Labrinth and Emeli Sandé. Written by Labrinth, Mike Posner and Sandé, it was released as the 6th single from Labrinth's debut album, Electronic Earth, on 18 November 2012.

Flood of Tributes for Slain Woolwich Soldier

Lee Rigby, age- 25 years, married, with 2 year old son

The family of the British soldier brutally slain in a cleaver attack in southeast London spoke movingly Friday of a man who was a devoted husband, father and brother, as well as a dedicated serviceman.

Stepfather Ian Rigby said Drummer Lee Rigby was a "precious gift" who had always wanted to serve in the army and was a devoted family man.

When a soldier is serving in Afghanistan, "you come to terms with it," Ian Rigby said. "You don't expect something like that on your doorstep. It's very difficult."

Bayern vs Dortmund: The Stage is Set

The stage is set for the world to enjoy the historic all-German UEFA Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley stadium, London @ 7.45pm. The tension in the air is thick enough to be cut with a knife. Both teams are in top form, highly determined and confident.

I forsee a match that will end in penalty shootout- but the winner, I can't tell.
